Wrinkle Paint High Temperature Spray in Ferrari XL Red

The Ferrari XL red wrinkle paint is used to paint engine parts with the same texture as achieved using a body shop spray gun in the factory.

The XL version is the original used on factory engines and produces larger wrinkles than all other versions.

Ferrari XL Red must be applied over the white wrinkle primer.

High-temperature wrinkle spray paint for the original restoration of sports engines such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Harley Davidson, Lancia Stratos, Delta HF Integrale, Escort Cosworth.

This high-temperature engine wrinkle paint is also used for design and decor objects, such as Nikon camera lenses and decorative pieces, thanks to its incredible resistance to scratches, heat, and abrasions.

Once dried, it is more resistant than catalyzed paint, but it is essential to follow the technical sheet instructions to achieve these results.

To use and apply this product correctly to engines, it is mandatory to use our high-temperature primers. For other applications in the design and architectural sectors, we recommend reading the technical sheet and contacting our office.

Key Differences Between Liquid and Spray Versions

  1. The spray comes in standard small-to-medium wrinkle texture and XL large wrinkle texture, similar to the original liquid version for body shop applications.
  2. The spray version is less effective for large components, such as some engine heads or large design pieces, as it cannot coat large surfaces uniformly. For professional work, we recommend using the liquid version with a spray gun.

Please consult the technical sheet for detailed application instructions.

Preparation of Metal or Alloy Parts

  • Exclusively use our Wrinkle Primer.
  • Sandblast and paint with Wrinkle Paint primer within 2 hours of sandblasting.
  • Handle parts with latex gloves to prevent oxidation and clean with Wrinkle Paint degreaser.
  • Thoroughly clean and blow with compressed air.
  • Remove old paint or rust residues with sandpaper if not sandblasted.
  • Prime with Wrinkle Paint primers (spray or liquid). Do not use other brands.
  • If more than 2 hours pass, re-sandblast the parts.

Preparation of Plastic Parts

  • Always use Wrinkle Primer, even on plastic surfaces.

Steps:

  • Clean with anti-static degreasers such as our universal anti-silicone degreaser.
  • Remove traces of old or residual paint.
  • Prepare with Wrinkle Primer plastic adhesion promoter.

Application of Wrinkle Paint

The same rules apply for both the spray and liquid professional versions.

  • Spray Version: Shake well and begin painting.
  • Liquid Version: Shake the can briefly, pour into a spray gun with a 1.3 or 1.4 nozzle, and filter through automotive paint strainers. Do not use other nozzle sizes.

Steps:

  1. Apply 1-2 coats of primer and let it dry for one hour at room temperature.
  2. Apply a light anchoring coat of wrinkle paint and wait 5 minutes.
  3. Apply the first full coat. Ensure the surface is glossy and fully wet. Wait 5 minutes in summer or 15 minutes in winter.
  4. Apply the second full coat and wait as above.
  5. Apply the third full coat, waiting 20 minutes in summer or 45 minutes in winter before heating.

Optional: Some users apply a fourth coat, depending on desired texture. Always perform tests before final application.

Curing and Wrinkling Process

  • Wrinkle paint dries completely in 20 days (or 30 in winter) regardless of the heating method. For faster curing, use an oven for 3 hours at 50–60°C.

Heating Methods

  1. Small or Body Shop Ovens:

    • Bake at 70°C for 30 minutes in a ventilated/static mode. Cool for 12 hours before handling and at least 1 week before assembly.
    • A professional oven can wrinkle parts in 10–20 minutes.
  2. Professional Heat Gun:

    • Heat evenly until wrinkles form. Avoid uneven results, especially on complex parts like motorcycle cylinders. Recommended for small parts only.
  3. Infrared Lamps:

    • Effective but require precise usage. Follow instructions for proper wrinkling and cooling times.
  4. Sunlight in Summer:

    • On warm days (25°C+), expose parts to sunlight for consistent wrinkling. Ensure uniform exposure to avoid uneven results.

Resistance to Gasoline and Reassembly

  • Ensure maximum resistance by allowing 30 days of drying at room temperature or 15 days with heating.
  • Parts can be reassembled after 48–72 hours, but full durability develops later.

Aesthetic Characteristics

Wrinkle paint features a unique textured appearance, resembling corduroy.

  • Wrinkle size varies with the number of coats.
  • Notable textures are found on Harley Davidson Nightster, Ferrari, and Lamborghini engines.
